Repairing the leaky outdoor faucet
at your home or any place can save great amount of time and money which
can prevent the water damage to the exterior of home or leakage into
the basement windows. Here are few steps which will repair the leaking
outdoor faucet.
Now you can do it yourself or call
professional plumbing and drain solutions, depending on the severity of
drain clogging and fracturing. If you decide to do it yourself then here
are few steps which will guide you suitably for doing the process.
Step 1: Prepare
If you find the outdoor valve of water supply under the basement of kitchen sink, then you can turn the water supply off for the faucet outside.
Bring the necessary supplies along on
the small tray. You can even get bolts, nuts, washers such that they
won’t disappear between the patios or in the lawn paving stones.
Step 2: Take out the faucet Turn Handle
Use the appropriate shape and size of
the screwdriver for taking off faucet and turning the handle. You can
fix the handle before screw on the tray.
Step 4: Remove the Plug
Take off the spigot of the faucet by
turning and gripping it with curved wrench. Now you can check washer
which is inside spigot. If this is seated or damaged incorrectly in the
tap then it may cause severe leak.
Step 5: Change the Washer
With help of flatbed screwdriver, dig
away the old washer to put in new washer. Reattach handle and spigot to
restore water supply temporarily from the house, before testing the
outdoor faucet for turning on the water.
If the tap is not leaking when the water
flow is shut off then your problem is solved. Still if the water
continues leaking down along with new washer, then continue to step 6
after the water supply is turn off.
Step 6: Access the Valve Stem of Faucet
Release the spigot and handle from the
tap. You can use crescent pull to reach out and turn off the packing nut
for release. Lift out the nut and pull the faucet valve stem.
Step 7: Supplant the washer of the faucet valve
Locate the washer at the bottom side of
valve stem for taking it off. You can change the old valve washer with
new. You can check the valve stem for corrosion, rust or hard water
build up which may interfere with system effectiveness. If the valve
stem gets damaged then you can replace with building and plumbing supply
center.
Step 8:
Reinstall the valve stem of faucet
You can put the old or new faucet valve
back in faucet hole. Reattach the filling nut with curved wrench. Now
apply thick lubricating grease layer around washer and packing nut.
Step 9: Reattach Faucet Handle and the Spigot
Now again attach spigot, turning off
carefully for avoiding bending and warping. Now screw handle back to
faucet again. Restore water supply of outdoor faucet. Now check the
leaks carefully when water is shut off and flowing.
You can replace the valve stem and spigot for washers which will solve all major problems.
